Primary School Mediation Tip
To encourage prep children to use peer mediation, give them a sticker at the end of the session i.e. You listen well, You worked hard etc. Great way of giving them encouragement. Also to help them to identify feelings, have a faces poster nearby so they can point out how they are feeling.

Parties stuck for an answer in Mediation
When you ask parties how they might come up with ideas for solving this problem and they shrug their shoulders, try; "Has this ever happened to you in the past, how did you solve it then?" or "Has this ever happened to a friend of yours in the past, how did they solve it?" Make sure you give them time to think about their answer though.

"What if parties get stubborn in mediation and refuse to budge?"
If parties get very stubborn, try reality testing them. For example two people may be feuding over parenting plans for their children. I would ask them; "what will happen if you cannot sort this out in mediation?" There reply is generally; "we will have to take it to solicitors" I follow that with; "how much will that cost you?" Their reply is "lots". I continue with; "Who then makes the decision over your child(ren)?" Their reply will be; "the judge". My instant reply is; "Is that what you want?" This is a good way to bring their squabbling back to reality. Leading them through to more unpleasant scenarios can be useful on occasions.
